Welcome to Mastering Node-RED
Welcome to Mastering Node-RED, a comprehensive course designed to take you from your first introduction to flow-based programming through advanced automation, IoT, data integration, cybersecurity, and industrial IIoT applications.
In this opening lesson, you will receive a quick overview of the course, the skills you will develop, and the types of practical systems you will build. You will also learn how the course supports different experience levels and career goals.
Node-RED provides a visual, low-code environment for connecting devices, online services, application programming interfaces, databases, messaging systems, dashboards, and industrial equipment. Instead of building every application entirely through traditional programming, you can create event-driven workflows by connecting configurable nodes into logical flows.
This course starts with the fundamentals and progressively introduces more advanced concepts. You do not need previous Node-RED or programming experience. Each section builds on the skills introduced earlier while remaining useful as a reference when you need help with a particular Node-RED feature, technology, or integration.
Throughout Mastering Node-RED, you will learn how to design, build, test, troubleshoot, document, secure, and deploy reliable Node-RED systems. The course follows a practical data-processing model:
Source or device → Ingest → Validate → Transform → Normalize → Enrich → Route → Store → Visualize → Alert → Act
You will learn how information moves through each stage and how Node-RED can connect these stages into a complete solution.
The course begins with Node-RED installation, editor navigation, nodes, messages, flows, and basic troubleshooting. It then expands into JavaScript, JSON, JSONata, APIs, webhooks, MQTT, databases, dashboards, home automation, IoT devices, industrial protocols, cybersecurity, monitoring, performance, cloud services, and artificial intelligence integrations.
This course emphasizes hands-on learning. You will complete guided demonstrations, exercises, troubleshooting challenges, labs, projects, quizzes, and larger capstone activities. These activities will help you move beyond simply understanding Node-RED concepts and begin applying them to realistic situations.
The primary demonstration environment uses Windows 11. Physical devices are optional for many activities because simulations and sample data can provide an equivalent learning experience. When hardware adds meaningful value, the course will explain the available equipment options and safe alternatives.
You will also receive downloadable checklists, worksheets, reference guides, starter flows, completed solutions, planning documents, and troubleshooting resources throughout the course.
You can follow the course from beginning to end or use it as a reference library. Beginners should complete the foundational sections in order because later lessons build on earlier concepts. Experienced developers, administrators, IoT professionals, and industrial automation specialists can use the learning paths to identify the sections most relevant to their goals.
Do not worry if some of the technologies mentioned in this introduction are unfamiliar. Each subject will be introduced carefully before you use it in a practical exercise.
Take a moment to think about what you want to accomplish with Node-RED. You may want to automate a home, connect IoT sensors, integrate business systems, build dashboards, process real-time data, monitor network equipment, work with industrial protocols, or create secure edge-to-cloud solutions.
Your goals will help you choose the most appropriate learning path. In the next lesson, you will explore the systems and projects you will build as you progress from your first Node-RED flow to advanced industrial IIoT solutions.
Welcome to Mastering Node-RED. This course is designed to take you from no Node-RED or programming experience to the point where you can design, build, troubleshoot, secure, document, and deploy useful event-driven systems. You may be here for home automation, IoT, APIs, dashboards, IT operations, industrial data, or professional Node-RED administration. The course gives each of those goals a defined route.
Node-RED is a low-code tool for event-driven applications. You build flows by connecting nodes, but the real skill is not dragging boxes onto a canvas. The real skill is learning how data moves, how to validate and transform it, how to recover from failure, and how to make a system maintainable and safe.
Our recurring pipeline is Source or Device, Ingest, Validate, Transform, Normalize, Enrich, Route, Store, Visualize, Alert, and Act. Early lessons isolate those stages. Later projects combine them into realistic systems.
This is one large reference course. You can complete every section in order, or follow a shorter path matched to your goal. Section 1 will help you make that decision without closing off any future topic.
A safety boundary applies throughout the industrial material. Node-RED will be used for communications, data acquisition, supervisory monitoring, visualization, historization, alerts, analytics, and safe simulation. It is not presented as a safety PLC, emergency-stop system, machine guard, certified safety control, or deterministic safety controller. No mains-voltage wiring is required.
By the end of this section, you will have a learning path, a version baseline, an organized workspace, and a clear picture of what you will build. Let us begin.
