Curriculum
Before purchasing a replacement display or opening your MacBook Pro, check whether Apple may still provide warranty, AppleCare or service-program coverage. In this lesson, you will learn how to review your coverage, look for applicable Apple Service Programs and contact Apple for a final eligibility decision. Taking a few minutes to complete this check could prevent you from paying for a repair that Apple may cover.

Before purchasing parts or attempting a display replacement, determine whether your MacBook Pro qualifies for service through Apple.
Depending on the computer’s coverage, repair history, serial number and the nature of the display problem, service may be available through:
Do not assume that the age of the MacBook Pro automatically makes it ineligible. You should complete the available checks and obtain a decision directly from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You will normally need the MacBook Pro’s serial number to check its coverage and service eligibility.
If the computer starts, locate the serial number by opening the Apple menu and selecting About This Mac. Depending on your version of macOS, you may instead need to select Apple menu > System Settings > General > About.
You may also find the serial number:
Carefully enter the serial number exactly as displayed. Avoid posting the complete serial number publicly or including it in screenshots shared online.
Visit Apple’s official coverage-checking page:
https://checkcoverage.apple.com/
Sign in with your Apple Account or enter the MacBook Pro’s serial number when prompted. Review any available warranty, AppleCare and support information.
Coverage information displayed online may not provide a final repair decision. Apple may need to inspect the computer before confirming whether a specific display problem is covered.
Visit Apple’s official Service Programs page:
https://support.apple.com/service-programs
Review the current list for any program that may apply to your MacBook Pro or its display problem.
Apple Service Programs are created for specific products and identified issues. Eligibility may depend on factors such as:
A model matching the general description of a service program does not automatically guarantee eligibility. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider must make the final determination.
Service programs can also expire or end. Always check Apple’s current Service Programs page instead of relying on an older article, video, forum post or repair guide.
If you believe the MacBook Pro may qualify for coverage, contact Apple Support before opening the computer or purchasing replacement parts.
You can begin through Apple’s repair page:
https://support.apple.com/repair
You may also contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Provide the representative with:
Ask the representative to confirm whether the repair could be covered by warranty, AppleCare, consumer law or an Apple Service Program.
Give Apple an accurate description of the symptoms without assuming the cause.
Relevant display symptoms may include:
Explain when the problem occurs, whether it changes as the display angle changes and whether the MacBook Pro works with an external monitor.
When possible, request a written repair estimate, case number or service summary. Record:
Keep this information with your course notes and repair documentation.
If Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider needs to inspect the MacBook Pro, do not disassemble it before that inspection.
Opening the computer, installing incompatible parts or causing damage during an attempted repair could affect the available repair options. Complete the Apple eligibility check and decide whether to accept or decline Apple’s service option before proceeding with the course repair.
If Apple confirms that the computer is not covered, compare Apple’s paid repair estimate with the cost, risks and benefits of replacing the display yourself.
Before giving the MacBook Pro to Apple or another service provider, create a complete backup of your important files.
A display repair does not normally require erasing the computer, but data loss is always possible during diagnosis or service. Confirm that your backup works before surrendering the computer.
Follow any additional preparation instructions provided by Apple, including account, security or device-access requirements.
Before continuing, record the following information:
Do not include the complete serial number in notes that will be posted publicly or shared with other students.
Before moving to the next lesson, make sure you have:
Proceed with the course repair only after you understand the available Apple service options and have decided that replacing the display yourself is appropriate.
Before opening the MacBook, take a moment to check whether the issue might qualify for Apple service or another official repair option.
This is especially important if the display problem is related to the backlight.
Some affected MacBook Pro displays may show vertical bright areas along the bottom edge of the screen. This is often called the “stage light” effect because the light pattern can look like stage lights shining upward from the bottom of the display.
Another symptom is a display backlight that stops working completely. The MacBook may still power on, and you may hear sounds or see signs of activity, but the screen remains dark because the backlight has failed.
Before doing a repair yourself, search Apple’s current service programs and contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Service eligibility can change over time, and older repair programs may no longer be active for every device.
This step matters because if the MacBook qualifies for official service, that may be safer, cleaner, and potentially more cost-effective than opening the machine yourself.
Also remember that once you begin disassembly, you may affect future service options, especially if parts are damaged during the repair.
So before moving forward, document the symptoms, confirm the model number, check the serial number if needed, and verify whether Apple or an authorized provider offers any repair path for the issue.
If there is no official service option available, then continue with this course and proceed carefully.
In the next lesson, we will review the main repair risks so you know what to avoid before the MacBook is opened.
